Bread is just one of those comfort foods that feels like home. I’ve made an extra effort to have this classic white sandwich bread around to make home lunches an easy option for my kids. More often than not, they choose to bring a homemade tuna fish or a peanut butter and raspberry jam sandwich to school. This bread is light and fluffy enough for to choose it over storebought bread. It not only saves money and tastes better, but we can enjoy this treat, fresh from the oven with melting butter on a thick slice. The kids get so excited to come home to fresh bread! This homemade bread is easy to make. Just a little patience to let it rise, and you too can enjoy fresh, soft homemade white bread.
Tips and Tools
- Using a standing mixer with a dough hook, helps this bread come together so easily!
- I love to use long bread pans, 14″ x 4.5″ to create lots of perfectly sized slices of bread for sandwiches. I love my Wilton bread pans!
- This pastry cutting and scraping tool is inexpensive. It helps cut through dough easily and scrapes excess dough and flour off the counter when it’s time to cleanup.
- I like to store this bread in these plastic bags, specifically made for longer loaves.
Ingredients for Homemade Classic White Sandwich Bread
This recipe calls for ingredients that you usually have on hand!
- 2 cups very warm water (95-115 degrees)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons dry active yeast, love this brand
- 1/3 cup melted salted butter
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 5 1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions for Homemade Classic White Sandwich Bread
In a standing bowl mixer, add water, sugar, and yeast. Mix so the yeast is wet, and let it sit for 5 minutes. The yeast should be frothy and bubbly after 5 minutes. If not, get new yeast and start again. Then add melted butter and salt. Next, slowly add flour, 1 cup at a time. Dough should be shaggy, and not sticky to the touch. Mix the dough for 5 minutes.
Next, place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let dough rise in a warm place till doubled in size, about 1 hr. Place the dough onto a slightly oiled or floured countertop. Knead the dough to remove air. Then cut the dough in half. Press each half into a rectangle and roll the dough up tight. Place in oiled bread pan. Let the dough rise in the pan till doubled, about another hour.
Bake in 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 25-30 minutes till bread has a medium brown crust and sounds hollow when tapping the top. Remove the bread from bread loaf after 5 minutes by turning upside down and tapping the pan. If you can muster the self control, wait about 10 minutes to cut into bread.

Notes
I like to use a long baking bread pan (12" X 4.5") for this recipe. It really looks like sandwich bread you find in the store. You can use regular as well. I also buy long bread loaf bags to store the bread.
