Come, take a look inside our 120-year-old farmhouse. This country style boy’s bedroom is traditional and nature inspired, with some playful, whimsical elements. I’ve mixed antique finds and inexpensive decor items to create a unique place in a small space.
I’ve included links at the bottom for the exact or similar items I used in this space.
Country Style Boy’s Bedroom
I have 5 wonderful sons and 1 sweet daughter. In case no one has told you, sons really are marvelous. They have a natural curiosity, a loving protectiveness, and a generously giving character.
Since the time they were young, my sons have had a unique interest in nature. Animals were fascinating, and rocks were special. They preferred adventures with bugs and dirt and just a little bit of peril.
I hoped to bring some of these elements together in their space to create a country style boy’s bedroom.
In our 120 year old farmhouse, we have two bedrooms upstairs. This is the smaller of the two rooms. The floor square footage is made to feel smaller by a sloped ceiling. It is a tight, but cozy space.
Wall Art
This week my twelve-year-old son walked around the yard and identified every bird he saw. I have to say it was the sweetest sight. With binoculars around his neck and a backpack filled with his bird book and notes, he documented 10 birds, ranging from mallard ducks to clay colored sparrows.
Drawing on our love of birds, I found three beautifully colored poster size prints. They come on thick paper, which assuredly my boys have torn, but they are still lovely to display with oak-colored wooden magnetic hangers. There are many prints online to choose from, but sticking with our nature theme, I chose the birds, owls, and insects posters.
Antique Spindle Beds
Perhaps the star of the room, are the matching antique spindle beds. They were a lucky Facebook marketplace find. A few years ago, I saw someone posted one bed for sale. I was able to quickly snag it for $50. After owning it for a year or so, I thought maybe I should sell it. We really needed a matching set. Thankfully I held onto it, and to my surprise, a year later, the same seller posted the other matching bed. He had originally held onto one for sentimental purposes, it was he and his brother’s childhood beds. I was so happy to reunite the beds! They deserve to stay together.
Textiles and Bedding
The bedroom has a mix of patterns, dotted sheets, plaid curtains, tartan wool blankets, houndstooth brown throw pillows.
I love the classic cottage look of the blue plaid curtains! They are thick, lined, and while not quite blackout, very room darkening. They are perfect for a boy’s room!
For the bedding, I started with cotton sheets with a small dot pattern. Next, I layered on a white cotton quilt with a matching sham. I absolutely love this cotton quilt, it’s the same one I have on my bed! They get softer with each wash and are perfect by themselves for the summer.
With this white base, I have the flexibility to add a variety of throw blankets. These tartan wool blankets are a great addition for cooler months.
I found the houndstooth throw pillow covers and inserts (I size up on inserts) on Amazon. Despite being inexpensive, the covers are thick and good quality.
Finally, I layered a small vintage run on a large jute rug. The braided jute rug with a darker boarder is the perfect base for the room. It helps cover up the purple carpet that is in this 120-year-old farmhouse we are renting. The red toned vintage rug is a fun pop of color in the room and helps it feel cozier.
Acessories For A Country Style Boy’s Bedroom
I’ve seen really neat articulating bird mobiles for sale on Etsy, however, I couldn’t bring myself to spend almost $200 for one. After a little thought and research, I decided to make one. I had some white oak boards, so really my only purchase was the eye screws, fishing wire, and stain. I used a branch from one of the yard trees to hang the duck from. The children love pulling on the bird, and watching it fly. I think it adds the perfect whimsical touch and helps the room feel magical.
A few other accessories help the room feel finished, such as the green lamp, the blue ottoman in the corner, and of course, many toys, books, and stuffed animals galore.
Storage Solutions
Because this room is so small, I need clever ways to organize this space and keep visual clutter tucked away. The first solution is the large flat containers under each bed. The boys put all their built Lego sets in them they don’t want to destroy, or other special items that are off limits to other.
The closet is again, a very small space, but we make the most of it with cubby storage and totes. This is where the boys keep all their clothes. It also acts as counter to put their baseball cards, tool kits, and drones.
Finally, the boys use a small Ikea dresser as a nightstand. This helps them have a place to put all their little knick knacks and helps their room to feel less cluttered.
We do have a loft area upstairs that we use for a majority of their toys and books. Their rooms are mostly for clothes and sleeping.
